GLOSSARY TERM

Class code

A workers' compensation classification identifier used to group business operations or job exposures for rating and reporting.

Class codes organize workers' compensation exposures by the nature of business operations and work performed. They are used with payroll or another exposure base in developing premium and in statistical reporting.

NCCI publishes classification code resources for its jurisdictions, but some states use independent bureaus, state-special codes, or monopolistic-state systems. A class code is not the same thing as NAICS, and the correct code cannot be chosen solely from a job title.
