Casual employment
Irregular or occasional work that some state workers' compensation statutes exclude only when additional statutory conditions are met.
“Casual” does not mean that every short-term, part-time, or day worker is outside workers' compensation. State statutes use their own tests, and some require both casual character and work outside the employer's regular business before an exclusion applies.
Pennsylvania lists casual workers only when the employment is casual in character and not in the regular course of the employer's business. New York, by contrast, generally treats casual or day labor for a for-profit business as employment, while publishing a narrow household-yard-work example. The label alone is not determinative.
