GLOSSARY TERM

Multi-member LLC

A limited liability company with two or more members; workers' compensation treatment of working members depends on state law, management structure, ownership, and industry.

A multi-member LLC is not automatically treated like a partnership for workers' compensation in every state. Some states focus on whether members manage the company, how many member-managers there are, family relationships, ownership percentage, or whether the business is in construction.

Washington's published LLC guidance distinguishes member-managed and manager-managed structures and sets specific exclusion conditions. Florida applies its own member exemption requirements, including different construction and non-construction limits.
